Stop Being Busy and Start Living With Purpose
Lessons on Productivity, Focus, and Faith from Todd Hopkins
In today’s world, almost everyone feels overwhelmed. We hear people say it constantly: “I’m so busy.” “My schedule is packed.” “I don’t have time.”
Busyness has become normal. Some people even wear it like a badge of honor. But what if being busy isn’t actually a good thing? What if it’s the very thing holding us back from the life God designed us to live?
That is the powerful message shared by business leader and faith-driven teacher Todd Hopkins in a leadership conversation about busyness versus productivity. His teaching challenges the way we think about time, purpose, and productivity, not just in business, but in life.
The Difference Between Busy and Productive
Todd makes a bold statement: busyness is not the same as productivity.
Being busy means you are doing a lot of activity. Being productive means you are doing the right activity.
Many people go through entire days checking emails, attending meetings, scrolling their phones, running errands, and jumping from one task to another. At the end of the day, they feel exhausted, but when they stop and think about it, they realize they didn’t actually move closer to their goals.
Todd decided years ago that he would stop using the word “busy” altogether. Instead, he replaced it with the word productive. When someone asks him how his day was, he doesn’t say, “I was busy.” He says, “I was productive.”
That one mindset shift changed everything.
He even created his own definition of busyness:
Busyness is misguided activity with unclear goals, often used as an excuse for not focusing on what matters most.
That definition hits hard because many of us see ourselves in it.
A Life-Changing Moment
Todd shared a story that sparked this change. One evening, after a long day of work, he came home and told his wife, “I feel like I was busy all day and didn’t get anything done.” Her reaction was simple, but powerful. She wasn’t impressed.
In that moment, Todd realized something important: if he was going to spend time away from his family working, then that time needed to matter.
He made a decision that day that his life would not be defined by busyness. It would be defined by purposeful productivity.
The Hidden Root of the Problem
As Todd worked with business owners, leaders, and teams over the years, he began to notice something deeper. The real issue wasn’t always time. It wasn’t always workload.
The real issue was unwillingness.
That’s a tough word, but it’s an honest one.
He explained it with a simple example. Many of us have goals we’ve had for years. Learn a new language. Get healthier. Read more. Grow spiritually. Start that project. Write that book.
We often say we haven’t done those things because we’re “too busy.” But if we’re honest, the real reason is that we haven’t been willing to do what it takes consistently.
That doesn’t mean we’re bad people. It means we’re human. But it does mean we have to take responsibility.
Growth requires discipline. Purpose requires focus. Calling requires commitment.
Productivity That Compounds Over Time
One of the most encouraging ideas Todd shares is that productivity compounds over time, just like interest.
Small daily choices add up. Small daily focus creates momentum. Small daily obedience builds legacy.
When you choose to be productive instead of busy, you don’t just improve one day, you improve your future.
Todd saw this in his own life and business. Under his leadership, Office Pride Commercial Cleaning Services grew into a respected national franchise. But more importantly, it became known as a company that honored God, cared for people, and operated with integrity.
When leaders choose productivity with purpose, it doesn’t just affect them. It affects their families, their teams, their communities, and their impact for generations.
The Power of Vision and Clarity
Another key point Todd emphasizes is the importance of clarity of vision.
People struggle with distractions when they are unclear about their purpose.
When you know who God created you to be, what He has called you to do, and what matters most in this season, it becomes much easier to say no to distractions.
Todd shared that he often says no to good opportunities simply because they don’t align with his calling. That’s wisdom. Without clarity, everything feels urgent. With clarity, you can prioritize what truly matters.
He encourages leaders to ask God deeper questions:
- What is Your will for my life?
- What am I missing?
- Where am I allowing distractions to replace obedience?
- Am I building what You designed, or what I want?
These are not easy questions, but they are powerful ones.
Productivity Isn’t Just About Business
This message isn’t only about success in work. It’s about life.
Todd challenges us to think about our legacy. One day, each of us will look back on our life. The question will not be, “How busy were you?” The question will be, “Did your life count?”
Were we present with our families? Did we invest in our marriages? Did we serve others? Did we follow God’s direction? Did we live on purpose?
Distractions steal those opportunities. Busyness masks them. Productivity protects them.
Faith, Trust, and Rest
One of the most meaningful parts of Todd’s teaching is the connection between productivity and trust in God.
Many people struggle to slow down because they feel like everything depends on them. They fear that if they stop, everything will fall apart.
But real faith says, “God is in control, not me.”
Todd talks about the importance of rest, boundaries, and trusting God with outcomes. When we trust God fully, we stop striving in unhealthy ways. We work diligently, but we also rest confidently. We plan wisely, but we also surrender daily.
That balance is where true peace and effectiveness live.
A Challenge Worth Taking
Todd ends with a simple but powerful challenge: try going 30 days without using the word “busy.”
Instead, say “productive.” Instead, ask, “Did I move the needle today?” Instead, evaluate your time honestly.
It sounds small, but it forces awareness. And awareness is the first step to change.
A Life That Truly Matters
Todd Hopkins’ message is not just about time management. It’s about stewardship of time, calling, influence, and life.
God created each of us with purpose. Not random purpose. Not vague purpose. But specific, intentional design.
When we live distracted, we drift. When we live focused, we grow. When we live surrendered, we thrive.
Busyness leads to exhaustion. Productivity leads to impact. Purpose leads to fulfillment.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or frustrated, maybe the solution isn’t doing more. Maybe the solution is doing less, but doing the right things.
Stop saying you’re busy. Start asking if you’re productive. Start asking if you’re aligned with God’s purpose.
Because at the end of life, what will matter most is not how much you did, but whether you lived the life you were created to live.
